✦ Synopsis

The recent meeting in honor of Professor 0. K. Rice was almost totally devoted to the problems of chemical dynamics. The following is a personal account, summarizing the main themes.

Over one hundred scientists met under the auspices of the Department of Chemistry of the University of North Carolina for two days (November 21-22, 1968) of scientific sessions in honor of 0. K. Rice. The area of scientific activity of Professor Rice is perhaps best summarized by the title of his recent book [l], and from this breadth, the scientific committee, chaired by Professor R. A. Marcus, has selected a program with particular emphasis on chemical kinetics.

Approximations can be consistent with the very high accuracy associated with traditional quantum chemistry provided that the approximations are variational. Ž . **Abstract:** Chemical reactions correspond to irreversible processes creating entropy. Chemistry belongs to the class of __nonintegrable__ Poincare systems. In general, chemistry is associated with resonancesβ€”transitions of quantum states. We have studied some very simple examples of such processe
