โฆ Synopsis
Mcssbauer data for both llgSn and 12gI have been analyzed to yield a consistent interpretation of the chemica1 bonding in SnI4. The Sn-I bond contains about 23% n-character. and 5-6s s-hybridization is involved in the iodine o-bonding orbital. The atoms in SnI4 are essential y neutral, tltz net charges being -0.015 on iodine and iO.060 on tin. These results resolve the apparent discrepancy between tin and iodine Miissbauer experiments. Stannic iodide, SnZq, is a molecular crystal containing only two kinds of atoms, both of which can be studied by the technique of Mossbauer resonance.
The structure is relatively simple, consisting of iodine atoms tetrahedrally coordinated about, and covalently bonded to, a ten-
