✦ Synopsis
The bonding in the As 6 4À ion is studied in the unusually low-coordination environment provided by the compound {Rb[18]crown-6)} 2 Rb 2 As 6 •6 NH 3 . Theoretical analysis of the related P 6 4À ion indicates an unusual P¼P bond which contains major contributions from the lone pairs. Outside a highly coordinating environment, these Pn 6 4À (Pn = P, As) species do not seem to be planar, 10p aromatic, or lone-pair aromatic. For details, see the Communication by N. Korber and co-workers on the following pages.
