✦ Synopsis
When helium expands through an expansion valve, the Joule-Thomson effect is observed. In this expansion, the value of temperature decrease or increase is an important factor in the design of a helium liquefier or refrigerator.
Although these values can be read by means of an ordinary Mollier chart of helium, the Mollier chart available in the usual references shows so little detailed data that it is rather difficult to determine the precise value. In order to select the optimum temperature and pressure for designing cryogenic apparatus, it would be more desirable to prepare a systematic chart which directly represents the Joule-Thomson effect. Accordingly, an attempt was made to illustrate the temperature change in isenthalpic expansion of helium, concerning the expansion to 1 atm, as in Figure 1.
