✦ Synopsis

Donald Rumbelow has written with a wealth of authority the first full-scale history of the police and crime in the City of London. H e tells how in the Elizabethan city the Provost Marshal hanged offenders from a portable gallows, how at a time of municipal financial crisis the Marshal's offices were put up to auction and sold to the highest bidder, how the watchmen served the public amidst the city's stews and slums, and how eventually the City of London police emerged and slowly brought the city under control.

The author, a serving city policeman, has written a book rich in social history of an age, and one which will be fascinating reading for policemen everywhere who have a feeling for the origins of their honourable calling.
