β¦ Synopsis
Braad band emission which bas two peaks at 290 nm and 420 nm was observed in Yb3+-activated LuP04 and YPO4. It is shown that thΓ―s emission is due to a charge-transfer type transition, i.e. the reverse process of the charge-transfer absorption of Yb3+ ions It is well known that some of the transition-metal and lanthanide ions in crystals and solutions show broad absorption bands in the W regΓ―on due to a transition caused by the transfer of an electron from a ligand to the incomplete f or d shell of the ions. This kind of transition is called charge-transfer absorption (CT absorption).
