✦ Synopsis
In the mole cricket Scapteriscus borellii (2n ; = 22 + XO) male meiotic prophase was studied by Cbanding, fluorescent banding and silver impregnation. The nucleolus grows through early stages and reaches maximum size at a mid-diplotene phase which is characterized by a typical 'diffuse' stage has been described in numerous species, a variability in such descriptions is observed. These differences could arise from the confusion between morphologically similar but not comparable stages. Based on the information available at present, the existence of two different types of diffuse stage is proposed.
