The application of MALDI mass spectrometry to desorb protein biomarkers from intact viruses, bacteria, fungus, and spores is the focus of this review. Instrumentation, sample collection, sample preparation, and algorithms for data analysis are summarized. Optimally these analyses should be carried out in less than five minutes. Successful applications are discussed from biotechnology, cell biology, and the pharmaceutical industry. Β© 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Mass Spec Rev 20:157–171, 2001

This chapter will address the applications of protein-based bioinformatics to analysis of microorganisms introduced intact into the instrumental system for rapid processing and analysis. Strategies that require offline extraction and fractionation of proteins will not be discussed. Although the ampl

## Abstract In recent years a major effort by several groups has been undertaken to identify bacteria by mass spectrometry at the single cell level. The intent of this review is to highlight the recent progress made in the application of single particle mass spectrometry to the analysis of microorg
