✦ Synopsis

A two-phase two-impinging-stream absorber was operated with a CO,-water system. It proved to offer a high effectiveness with respect to maintainability, operability and versatility, thus making it a very attractive device for industrial applications. The mass transfer coefficients vary within the range 2.5-122 s-'. These values are the highest among the conventional absorbers. The respective number of theoretical plates varies between five and seven, with an energy consumption of 6-16 kJ per kg H,O. For practical applications and scale-up, the mass transfer coefficients were correlated in terms of dimensionless groups, among which is the new impinging number. A systematic investigation of the impinging phenomena revealed two maxima in the curves of the absorption rate and the mass transfer coefficient vs the internozzle distance. This behaviour is explained on the basis of short-and long-range impinging effects.
