โœฆ Synopsis

All five novel, thermotolerant, alcohol-producing, Khyvenwnyces naur&zrms yeast strains, capable of growth at 5Z'C, grew aerobically on lactose (growth rates of 0.43 to 0.5 h-l), whey permeate (0.38 to 0.43 h-l), cellobiose (0.18 to 0.3 h-') and xyiose (0.18 to 0.26 h-I). They also grew maerobically at 40 (0.18 to 0.19 h-l) and 4.W (0.09 to 0.14 h-l). All fermented glucose to ethanol and tolerated ethanol at 6 95 g 1-l at 45*C. Their potential for industrial alcohol production, possibly in combination with the dairy and wood-related industries, is discussed.

An enrichment and isolation program for new ethanol-producing thermotolerant yeasts as well as a screening program of some known thermotolerant strains resulted in the selection of several strains capable of growth at 40-43ยฐC. Among these strains four grew and fermented sugar cane molasses at 43ยฐC u
