✦ Synopsis
The proceedings of the "Second International Symposium on Characterization and Control of odours and VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)", held at Louvain-la-Neuve, contain about 45 lectures and posters. The book is divided into five chapters under the headings: Opening Session, Session A. Chemical and Olfactive Characterization plus Substitution Methods; Session B: Abatement Techniques I; Session B: Abatement Techniques 11; Session Posters and Short Communications. Under these less informative headings very interesting and informative papers from all areas related to the main topics of the meeting were hidden. Besides a survey of the emission reduction programme for VOC of the OECD countries (P. WIEDERKEHR). the adequate strategy of the EU (M. WOLF), problems of France (B. BOUSCAREN et al.) and of Belgium (A. VANKEERBERGEN), aspects of olfactory information (P. LAFFORT). odours metrology and industrial olfactometry (J. HERMIA and S. VIGNERON) and a study of VOC emission from an urban sanitary landfill site (C. GUY et al.)'were discussed in the chapter "plenary lectures''. In the papers of the other sessions, the authors report on advances in this area using data about more practical aspects, e.g. treatment techniques (water, gases), odour control in plants. application of membranes, catalytic oxidation processes, reactor technologies or applications of activated carbon. Contrary to the papers of the opening session, some of the others are written as original papers with experimental details. This mixture of experimental communications with reviews brings some interesting aspects for the reader. The book contains clear figures. tables and schemes and gives a lot of information for every aspect of this topic. The book is recommendable and an invaluable addition to the library bookshelf.
