Abstract
The characteristics of the generalized Van VleckβWeisskopfβFrΓΆhlich type susceptibility (GVWF) are discussed. It is shown that the GVWF can represent both an oscillator type and a relaxational (Debye) type of phonon mode, usually adopted in the analysis of Raman spectra of soft modes in structural phase transitions. It is also shown that a susceptibility for a Isingβspin system in a transverse field has a close resemblance to the GVWF.
