✦ Synopsis
The essential oils produced from 9 dierent cultivars of Ocimum basilicum L. were analysed by GC±MS, and classi®ed into ®ve cultivar groups. The oil from a local cultivar in the Philippines, rich in estragol, was examined in more detail by solvent extraction, distillation and column chromatography when many unusual volatile components, not detected previously in basil oils, were identi®ed.

The amount and the enantiomeric composition of linalol were determined in the essential oils of seven chemotypes of Ocimum basilicum L., in the oils of O. sanctum L., O. gratissimum L. and O. canum Sims. of Thai origin, and in commercial basil oils. The linalol isolated from cultivars of O. basilicu
The composition of the essential oil of Ocimum gratissimum L. obtained from plants originating from Bangladesh and from plants introduced into Bangladesh from India is reported. The oil obtained from plants native of Bangladesh can be classi®ed as thymol-type according to its thymol content (58.2%),
The influence of y and b-irradiation and storage time on the composition of the volatile compounds in basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) has been examined. Dried basil was exposed to yand P-rays at the doses of 3, 10 and 30 kGy, and volatile components were isolated by simultaneous distillation-extraction
Water-distilled essential oils of nine samples of Acinos alpinus (L.) Moench, collected from the Aegean region of Turkey, were analysed by GC±MS. One-hundred-and-twenty compounds, which amounted to 84.4±92.8% of the total components detected were identi®ed. The main constituents were found as germac
The essential oils of aerial parts of three samples of Lantana camara L. collected at dierent places in the Amazon Region were obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC±MS. The main constituents found in the oil of leaves and thin branches of a specimen collect in the State of Amapa (sample
