✦ Synopsis

  1. and Raman spectra of solid a,a-trehalose and a,a-trehalose-2,3,4.6,6-6,, in the C-H and C-D stretching regions are recorded. The experimental data are reproduced satisfactorily by normal co-ordinate and i.r. absorption intensity calculations which take into account the specific interactions of each C-H hydrogen with nearby oxygen lone-pairs. The relevance of the region 280&3000 cm-' in a,?-trehalose-2,3.4,6,6-d,,, for the study of the conformational properties of the inter-glycosidic linkage is discussed.

X-ray crystallographic analyses are reported for the two title compounds (8 and 9), of which the former crystallized in two modifications (8n and 8b). In all three structures, the pyranose rings have the %, (D) conformation and the substituents at C-l are axial and those at C-24-4 are equatorial. Th
