✦ Synopsis

In this paper we explore and discuss three important patterns of change we think will influence the development of (future) environmental management systems in organizations. After presenting those changes we first of all reflect on their significance for the future of environmental management. The conclusion is drawn that EMSs within organizations are lagging behind changes in society at large. Therefore we plead for the development of 'new environmental management systems' (NEMSs). This plea is supported by eight recommendations that will enable organizations to (re)act adequately towards those changes. Copyright
