The mechanism responsible for formation of attached, dephosphorylated crossbridges (latchbridges) in smooth muscle is controversial. Myosin light chain phosphorylation may be obligatory for crossbridge attachment; if this were the case, latchbridges would arise solely by dephosphorylation of attache
