✦ Synopsis

The change of mean monthly rainfall, expressed as a percentage of mean annual rainfall, is described for the region south of 17"s during the course of summer. The areas with most rapidly increasing rainfall during monthly intervals are found to follow an almost circular path, starting out along the east coast and the adjacent interior in September and then being successively displaced to Zimbabwe, northern Botswana and northern South West AfricafNamibia, central and southern South West AfricaINamibia and ending in the central Cape Province in March. Several features of the atmospheric circulation and humidity are suggested and described as being partly responsible for the changing rainfall distribution. KEY WORDS Mean monthly percentage rainfall Changing distribution of rainfall Atmospheric circulation patterns Hodographs Intertropical Convergence Zone Inter-ocean trough Heat low Botswana trough Change of sea-level pressure distribution Change of 850 and 500 hPa contour fields

The summer distribution of distinct mesohabitats (gravel, sand, silt, Ranunculus beds and emergent vegetation patches) at four 100-m sections along the length of a lowland river was studied over 3 years, together with their associated faunal assemblages. Habitat proportions in the sections showed li
