5 which provide peak power during operations such as acceleration and lifting heavy loads.

The 10 kW PEM fuel cell delivers sufficient energy to allow the forklift to operate for an 8 h shift, and also features a short recharge time where users can refuel hydrogen for a full working shift in just one minute. The inclusion of supercapacitors means the system can provide more than 30 kW of peak power.

Proton Power's market focus lies in industrial applications where 'back-to-base' refueling occurs at the end of each shift or work period, such as in materials handling and mass transportation. Through partnerships with leading OEMs such as Skoda and Linde, its technology is already deployed in city buses and forklift trucks. The company is also targeting marine transportation applications; it provides the hybrid fuel cell propulsion system for Europe's first fuel-cell powered passenger ferry, which will be operating in Hamburg from 2008 [FCB, March 2007].
