✦ Synopsis

formed between No 7 Boat Trips, the Bristol Packet, and Auriga Energy Ltd -will showcase the hydrogen-fueled ferry for six months from June.

A year ago Bristol City Council invited companies to participate in the project [FCB, April 2010]. A local boatbuilder is now being contracted to build a ferry to the consortium's design. Locally based Auriga Energy has developed the hydrogen PEM fuel cell system that will be integrated into the boat. Air Products will supply the hydrogen and the dockside refueling rig.

The ferry will carry up to 12 passengers per journey, to demonstrate the commercial advantages of this technology to business, residents, commuters, and tourists. The use of hydrogenpowered transport offers a much smaller environmental impact in terms of air and water pollution, in addition to reduced noise.

Other European cities -such as Hamburg [FCB, March 2007] and Amsterdam [FCB, January 2010] -are running or planning to introduce hydrogen-powered passenger vessels, but in Bristol the municipally funded project is seen as an important contributor to the city's economic development.

'This project is innovative for Bristol, and innovation brings growth. The initial £225 000 (US$365 000) investment that this project will cost is pump-priming,' says councilor Neil Harrison, assistant cabinet member for sustainability. 'This project will help kickstart enterprise in new environmental technology and new areas of economic growth in Bristol, providing investment and more jobs for local people in the technologies of the future.'
