## Abstract Several derivatives of 2‐mercaptopyrimidine (containing ‐OH, ‐SH, ‐NH~2~ or ‐CH~3~ substituents) have been studied as corrosion inhibitors of ARMCO iron and low alloy steels in 1 M sulphuric acid solutions. Tests have been conducted during 6 h in the temperature interval between 60 and

Abstract
Cementite/Fe~3~C carbide in a commercial low carbon steel after prolonged service in naphtha environment with traces of sulphur of 0.3 ppm and at a temperature of 200–220°C has been examined. It has been stated that under the influence of sulphur, cementite at the steel surface and inside the steel is transformed into an unstable quasi‐crystalline phase enriched with sulphur/tramp elements and iron depletion. Cementite transformation and disintegration of the degraded carbide phase is connected with a release of carbon that diffuses into the steel in front of the sulphur diffusion zone. Beneath the steel surface a layer of low carbon content forms, followed by a zone of higher carbon content.

High chromium martensitic steels are designed to provide high corrosion resistance in combination with high strength. Some of these steel grades contain primary carbides for improving the wear resistance, e.g. the steel 440C. The present paper mainly deals with the effect of chemical composition and
