✦ Synopsis
Advances in cellular, molecular, biochemical, and in vivo genetic approaches, together with the power of genomics and proteomics, have established a comprehensive platform for experimentally addressing mechanisms that govern biological control. Arrays of genes and proteins that influence cell structure and function have been identified and characterized which collectively constitute an infrastructure for the cellular regulatory machinery. However, we are challenged by a database of regulatory components that is necessary but not biologically relevant until understood from the perspective of functional interrelationships that support physiological responsiveness. Consequently, it is becoming increasingly evident that there is a requirement to understand regulatory mechanisms within the context of cellular physiology.
