Abstract
The humoral and cellular responses to normal human ocular and joint tissue antigens were studied in rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and anterior nonโgranulomatous uveitis. No freeโcirculating autoantibodies could be detected by hemagglutination, immunodiffusion, and immunofluorescence. Uveaโretina, synovial membrane, and articular cartilage antigen preparations inhibited the migration of leukocytes from patients with rheumatoid arthritis. In ankylosing spondylitis inhibition could be induced only by synovial membrane antigens. Patients with anterior nongranulomatous uveitis were hypersensitive to uveaโretina antigens alone.
