โœฆ Synopsis

Two types of carbon nanoparticle, namely, C 60 (OH) 20 (blue-red-white) and C 70 -natural organic matter (NOM) (blue-green-redwhite) are illustrated. The C 60 (OH) 20 particles readily permeate through the plant cell wall, while the C 70 -NOM complexes are entrapped within the cell wall through agglomeration. Posttranslocation the C 60 (OH) 20 particles are largely excluded by the plasma cell membrane due to their hydrogen bonding with water. The C 70 -NOM particles, however, undergo active interaction with the plasma cell membrane through partitioning in the lipid bilayer and a low-level steady-state endocytosis. As a result, C 60 (OH) 20 and C 70 -NOM show distinctly different uptake by the plant cell.

Air-grown cells of a marine, small-celled (2 lam diameter) strain of Stichococcus bacillaris contained appreciable carbonic-anhydrase activity but this was repressed when cells were grown on air enriched with 5 % (v/v) CO2.
