β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
Intestinal folds of adult Xenopus laevis are formed by the proliferation of groups of cells in the tadpole epithelium at metamorphosis. As the folds increase in number and in height, mitoses become confined to the troughs and a gradient of decreasing mitotic activity from troughs to crests is formed. This pattern of cell proliferation was confirmed in autoradiographic studies with [^3^H]thymidine. Migration of cells from the fold troughs to the fold crests was also demonstrated by thymidine autoradiography and the epithelium renewal time was approximately 16 days. Thus cell proliferation and cell specialisation in the small intestinal epithelium of adult X. laevis are inversely correlated.

The integrin β£9β€1 is one of the recently identified integrins whose expression is restricted to specialized tissues. Its exact function is still unknown. In the present study, we have analyzed the expression of the β£9 subunit in human fetal and adult small intestinal and colonic epithelia as well as
## Abstract The effect of hydrocortisone on the antiβerythrocyte (SRBC) response of the South African clawed toad, __Xenopus laevis__, was studied. Hydrocortisone was administered two days prior to antigen injection and was found to reduce the eightβday antigenβbinding response of sensitized spleen
The respiratory epithelium is frequently injured by inhaled toxic agents or by micro-organisms. The epithelial wound repair represents a crucial process by which surface respiratory cells maintain the epithelial barrier integrity. The repair process involves both cell migration and proliferation, bu
