Abstract

We introduce a new approach, based on economic modelling, for determining the optimal cell coverage in the CDMA uplink. The approach takes into account resource usage in the uplink direction and user preferences, which are expressed through utility functions, and captures the tradeoff between having a large cell with many users versus having a smaller cell with fewer users, which however are able to transmit at a higher rate. Numerical investigations demonstrate how the optimal cell coverage is affected by the path propagation characteristics, the transmission power limit, the distribution of mobile users in a cell and the users' preferences.
