Only two years after returning to her hometown, Assistant Canton County Commonwealth Attorney Kit Babcock gets booted from her job.
After Kit reported sleazy attorney Walt Brown for unethical conduct and he got suspended from practicing law, the money for her position mysteriously dried up. Of course, the fact that Waltβs brother works in the governorβs budget office had nothing to do with this unfortunate turn of events.
Facing imminent unemployment, Kit thinks about returning to her old job of prosecuting lawyers for ethics violations (where, in fact, she once prosecuted Walt), but that means leaving her hometown of Obion in Canton County. And returning to a position where she got burnt out prosecuting horrible attorneys like Walt Brown might not be the best idea.
Then Kit wins a write-in election for Canton Circuit Court Clerk--a write-in election she didn't encourage at all.
After an incident the previous summer during which Kit got shot pulling a judge out of the path of a bullet, people in Canton County started a grass-roots campaign to write in Kitβs name for Canton Circuit Court Clerk against the incumbent, Gary Moss. Gary was at the shooting incident, too. And everyone who saw what happened tells the same story: Gary ran away when shots rang out.
On Election Night, after his defeat, Gary publicly and to her face threatens to sue Kit to keep his office, claiming she must have won by fraud. Kit wonders if the job is worth the lawsuit that will come with it.
As Kit ponders whether she should accept the office, Gary rather inconveniently turns up dead. And while the death seems to be an accident, information soon comes to light that the late Mr. Moss was actually murdered.
And Kit becomes the prime suspect.
Unless the real murderer is discovered, Kit can forget about being the clerk or going back to her old job--not to mention keeping her law license and her freedom.
