In a recent communication Hey (1979) examined some philosophical problems associated with the notion of causality. He suggested that 'traditional' notions of causality are very limiting and that further progress within fluvial geomorphology depends upon the adoption of 'mathematical reasoning' for the recognition of functional relations does not imply causality. In this reply we will argue that such conclusions are mistaken, and that the abandonment of the search for causal relations could do much to hinder real progress within the subject.
