โฆ Synopsis
Cationic polymerization of styrene(St) initiated by phosphorus trichloride(PC13) in nitrobenzene was carried out at 30 ยฐ. The initial rate was proportional to [St] 2 and [PCl3]. The overall activation energy was about 10.4 kcal/mole. The rate and the degree of polymerization were enhanced with increasing dielectric constant in benzene-nitrobenzene mixtures. The resulting polymers contained about one phosphorus unit per chain. A mechanism for the polymerization has been proposed.
