β¦ Synopsis
This work was developed from a symposium of the Polymer Division of the ACS in 1996. The 16 Chapters contain: 1. Carbocationic polymerization: a rejuvenation (TD Shaffer); 2. Comparison of controlled living carbocationic and radical polymerizations (K Matyjaszewski); 3. Kinetics of carbocationic polymerizations: initiation, propagation, and transfer steps (H Mayr, M Roth and G Lang); 4. Cationic copolymerization of methyl glyoxylate with cyclic acetals: structure of active species by phosphine ion trapping (M Basko, P Kubisa and S Penczek); 5. Thermodynamic study of the ionic polymerization of n-butyraldehyde (F Mohamed, M Moreau and JP Vairon); 6. Stability of propagating species of living cationic polymerization of isobutylene (D Held, B Ivan, A Mueller, F de Jong and T GrafΒ―and); 7. Copolymerization of 7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane with tetrahydrofuran (S Penczek, R Szymanski, J Pretula, K Kaluzynski and J Libiszowski); 8. Synthesis and photoinitiated cationic polymerization of cyclic ketene acetals ( JV Crivello, Y-L Lai and R Malik); 9. Noncoordinating anions in carbocationic polymerization: tris(pentaΒ―uorophenyl) boron as a Lewis acid catalyst (TD Shaffer); 10. Living cationic polymerization with Yb(OSO 2 CF 3 ) 3 as a water-resistant recoverable Lewis acid (K Sato, H Katayama, M Kamigaito and M Sawamoto); 11. The heterogeneous cationic polymerization of aromatic alkenes by aluminium triΒ―ate (A Gandini and Yao-Hong Yang); 12. Heterogeneous cationic polymerization initiators: polymerization of 2-methylpropene in the presence of FeCl 3 in non-polar medium (G Rissoan, S Randriamahefa and H Cheradame); 13. Amphiphilic block copolymers via cationic polymerization (O Nuyken, S Oh and S Ingrisch); 14. Capping of polyisobutylene with 1,1-diphenylethylene and its derivatives: kinetic and mechanistic studies (Young Cheol Bae, Z Fodor and R Faust); 15. Multi-arm star polyisobutylenes: polyisobutylene arms connected to a cyclosiloxane core (N Omura, A V Lubnin and J P Kennedy); 16. Coupling reaction of living polyisobutylene using bis(diphenylethenyl) compounds as coupling agents (Young Cheol Bae, S Coca, P L Canale and R Faust).
These touch on many parts of the subject and therefore the book is worth having although several articles do not reΒ―ect current theories. The editors have chosen not to correct, nor urged their contributors to correct, linguistic errors eg `imparted to' instead
