Xylem exudation from detopped tobacco plants (Nicotiana tobacum L. var Virginia Gold) was decreased by 10 -2 M concentrations of bicarbonate.The bicarbonate anion or its metabolic products were not readily transported to the xylem vessels of detopped plants. In the presence of nitrate ions, which gr
