โฆ Synopsis
Cathodic reduction of HP04 on the Ag electrode in alkaline solution was investigated by triangular-wave voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. The concentration of HBOP was varied over the range from 0.01 to 1 M (in relation to the methanol-HsOp fuel cell). From the triangularwave voltammograms and the chronopotentiograms obtained under the various conditions, the cathodic process of HpOB reduction is discussed. It is concluded that the total cathodic process is mainly controlled by diffusion of H401, but that it involves a chemical reaction before the fast chargetransfer reaction, or reduction of oxygen. The chemical reaction is considered to be chemical decomposition of HpOl to oxygen and hydroxyl ion. The rest potential and the limiting cd on cathodic polarization of the Ag electrode in H,O,-containing alkaline solution are also discussed and compared with those in O,-saturated alkaline solution.
