✦ Synopsis
The electrochemical reduction of tantalum from the molten KCI-KF-K,TaF, is shown to be a fast one step reaction: [TaFJc3 + 5Z+ Ta" + SF-Tantalum pentoxide dissolves in the chloride-fluoride melt and reacts with potassium fluortantalate to form monoxyfluodde tantalum complexes such as TaOF;' and, to a small extent, dioxyfluoride complexes such as Ta0,FT3. Depending on the cd and oxygen-containing ion concentration in the melt the cathodic proozss involves the five-electron reduction of one or more complexes of tantalum.
