Les époux Watrin, dont le mari est garde-chasse du duc d'Orléans, ont élevé trois enfants : Bernard, leur fils, maintenant garde-chasse lui aussi, Catherine, leur nièce, dont le père était un prisonnier allemand blessé recueilli par la famille, et Mathieu, un enfant abandonné qu'ils ont recueilli. Catherine et Bernard ont peu à peu appris à s'aimer, d'abord comme frère et soeur, puis comme des amants. Après dix-huit mois passés à Paris en apprentissage, Catherine revient chez les Watrin pour s'établir comme modiste à la ville toute proche. La longue séparation a conforté les deux jeunes gens dans leur amour. Mathieu, qui a un fond méchant et une rancune tenace envers Bernard, va inventer un piège diabolique pour faire échouer leur projet de mariage en manipulant l'honnête famille et en provoquant habilement la jalousie du jeune amant. Catherine Blum tient à la fois du théâtre, de l'étude de moeurs, du conte et du roman policier. Dumas s'y essaye avec bonheur au roman contemporain, sans dimension historique, et s'implique intimement en décrivant avec émotion, dans un long premier chapitre, les lieux de son enfance.
