The title compound, {[Mg(C 2 H 5 NO 2 )(H 2 O) 4 ](NO 3 ) 2 } n , contains cis-MgO 2 (H 2 O) 4 octahedra, which are connected by the glycine molecules to form helical chains. It is isostructural with its cobalt and nickel analogues.
