✦ Synopsis
The catalytic polarographic reduction of hydrogen ions in the presence of thiocyanatoplatinum(II) and (IV) complexes has been studied. The catalytic inactivity of the Pt(SCN),8-ions shows that the evolution of hydrogen can be only catalysed by the planar thiocanato complex of platinum(H). A specific current minimum observed in the catalytic reduction wave of hydrogen ions is ascribed to a change of catalyst structure under the influence of the electric field in the electrode double layer. The structural change of a planar Pt(SCN),B-complex is also responsible for the lack of the reduction of thiocyanatoplatinum complexes.
