✦ Synopsis

Ethene dimerization over a NiSO,/y-AlxOs catalyst was studied. An induction period was observed when the catalyst was calcined in an oxygen atmosphere, but no induction period was observed when it was calcined under vacuum. The generation of Ni+ was identified by electron spin resonance and infrared spectroscopy with CO as a probe molecule with the catalysts simply being calcined under vacuum or calcined in an oxygen atmosphere followed by exposure to ethene at room temperature. The activity was lost completely by CO poisoning. It was concluded that ethene dimerization over NiSO&-AlaOs proceeds via coordination catalysis in which the active site engaged for this dimsrization is Ni+ activated by acid sites with a strength of H0 c -3.0.

## Abstract BACKGROUND: A highly stable Fe/γ‐Al~2~O~3~ catalyst for catalytic wet peroxide oxidation has been studied using phenol as target pollutant. The catalyst was prepared by incipient wetness impregnation of γ‐Al~2~O~3~ with an aqueous solution of Fe(NO~3~)~3~· 9H~2~O. The influence of pH, t
