✦ Synopsis
wŽ . Ž . Ž .Ž . x 4q Ž III Ž . III Ž .. Water oxidation catalysis by bpy H O Ru-O-Ru H O bpy Ru OH -O-Ru OH complex was studied 2 2 2 2 2 2 Ž . Ž . Ž . in a homogeneous aqueous solution AS as well as heterogeneous Nafion membrane HM using Ce IV oxidant. The initial Ž y1 . Ž . O evolution rate, V mol s increased linearly at low complex concentrations under the excess Ce IV oxidant, showing 2 O 2 Ž y1 . that 4-electron water oxidation is catalyzed by one molecule of the complex. The intrinsic catalytic activities, k s , in O 2
the AS and HM were 4.2 = 10 y3 s y1 and 2.4 = 10 y3 s y1 , respectively. These values are much higher than those of well-known metal and metal oxide catalysts. Comparison of catalytic activity for various metal complexes and oxides is presented.
