La historia se centra en los Stamper, una familia de leñadores de Wakonda, un pueblo imaginario de Oregon. Los sindicatos de leñadores deciden ir a la huelga para protegerse contra la reducción de trabajo provocada por la aparición de las sierras eléctricas, pero los Stamper, dueños de su propia empresa y sin ninguna conexión con los sindicatos, deciden no solo seguir trabajando sino abastecer la región con toda la madera que los demás trabajadores habrían suministrado de no haberse convocado una huelga.
