β¦ Synopsis
In this contribution we offer a description of a research project in which an attempt is undertaken to improve patient education by nurses at surgical wards in hospitals. In a pilot study it was found that the current practice of patient education is inconsistent and often does not meet patients' demands. Based on this pilot, measures are developed to (a) standardise the information supplied to patients and (b) promote patients' opportunities to collect information by themselves, in order to meet individual demands. The effectiveness of the measures is evaluated by collecting data on physical recovery and emotional well-being among patients undergoing cholecystectomy or herniorraphy.
