A Cartes a Jones Street, «Temps Obert» ha acomplert un cicle que s’iniciava amb tot un seguit de modificacions d’una situació original, la infància del protagonista; ara reprèn a partir d’una situació secundària, o derivada, quan el Daniel Bastida d’Un camí amb Eva, que havia decidit d’ésser novel·lista, s’encara amb una de les possibles conseqüències del seu fracàs com a escriptor, la nit de Santa Llúcia i la conseqüència que té aquest fracàs el porta a dormir amb la seva cosina Gabriela, cosa que havia volgut fer sempre i que torça no tan sols aquell camí que l’havia de dur a Eva, sinó la totalitat del seu projecte vital, en la mesura que el tenia.
Té una estructura de novel·la epistolar, composta per trenta cartes de Daniel a Peralta, que viu a Amèrica, i nou de Peralta a Daniel, que viu a Barcelona, des del dia 21 de maig de 1967 fins al juliol del 1968, quan el novel·lista anuncia el seu retorn al país.
Escrita el 1968, per prohibició de la censura va trigar 10 anys a ésser publicada, en aquest cas, sense retallades.
