✦ Synopsis

The carotenoid pigments of the myxobacterium Sorangium comTositurn were analyzed by chromatographical and chemical techniques and by visible, infra red, and mass spectroscopy. Besides y-carotene, neurosporene, torulene, lycopene, and l',2'-dihydro-l'-hydroxy-~-carotene, four new carotenoid glycosides were found. These pigments were identified as l',2"-dihydro-l"-hydroxy-terulene glucoside ester (I), l',2'-dihydro-3,1'-dihydroxy-terulene glucoside ester (III), l',2'-dihydro-l'-hydroxy-torulene rhamnoside (II), and l',2'-dihydro-3,1'-dihydroxytorulene rhamnoside (IV).

The group of fruiting myxobacteria includes a great number of organisms pigmented by earotenoids. Recently, we reported on the carotenoid composition of StigmateUa aurantiaca (Kleinig and Reiehenbach, 1969; Kleinig et al., 1970) and Myxococcus ]ulvus (Reichenbach and Kleinig, 1971). The investigations are now extended to the celluloly~ie myxobacterium Sorangium compositum (Thaxter) gahn. This organism conrains a number of nonpolar carotenoids and four new carotenoid glycosides which are described in this communication.

* Fifth communication on the carotenoids of myxobacteria. Fourth communication see Arch. Mikrobiol. 76, 364--380 (1971).
