If you want to understand what osteopaths do in carrying out their medical practices you must first understand the basic principles of osteopathy. First, osteopathic physicians believe that the body does heal itself, though it must constantly fight off physical, emotional, chemical and nutritional problems which can upset the body's functioning and well-being. DOs believe that they must educate patients about good health and what to do to lead a healthier and fuller life. The DO recognizes that medication and surgery can be useful elements of treatment, but also believes that spinal manipulation can often accomplish more than other treatments in restoring the body to health.
