This textbook is aimed primarily at the postgraduate surgeon in training, although tIie authars believe it may be used also by the established surgeon. It is a multi-author work; the first 15 chapters relate to general topics and the remaining chapters cover the body in a systemic fashion with a final chapter on neonatal surgery. One could question the need for such an all embracing textbook in the 1990s when many in training make use of review articles. There has clearly been a significant length of time between gestation of the chapters and the final publication as many of the references are over
