β¦ Synopsis
An apparatus is described which is capable to determine cardiac excitability through the automatical registration of the strength-duration curve. The instrument consists of a circuit which discriminates premature QRS-complexes from normal QRS-complexes, it features logic circuits which "decide" whether strength or duration of the stimulus pulse should be altered and it contains a circuit which allows premature cardiac stimulation using a programmed sequence of stimuli. The instrument was designed to study local cardiac excitability which is important for the site of implantation of pacemakers and for the description of drug action. The mechanism of ventricular fibrillation and of physiological, pathological and pharmacological influences on cardiac refractoriness can be studied with greater ease.
