✦ Synopsis

A study has been made of a group of gamma lactones and peroxides on the frog heart. The hypothesis presented to explain the experimental results states that the cardiac activity of the lactones, as tested, is based upon peroxide formation from a free radical which in turn necessitates a resonating structure. Results are given indicating that the cardioactive product may be a hydroperoxide rather than the carbon to carbon form.

HE POSITIVE inotropic action exerted by the Tcardiac glycosides has been shown to be dependent upon the presence of an unsaturated lactone moiety (1-5). This observation initiated several attempts to evaluate the cardiac activity of simple lactones. Utilizing the frog lymph sac * Received July 23 1953 from the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, ' Schdol of Pharmacy, University of Kansas Lawrence. Abstiacted from a thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Kansas by Moreno L. Keplinger for the degree of Master of Science.
