✦ Synopsis
The influence of solvent fractionation of coal liquid pitch into oil, asphaltene, and preasphaltene on carbonization and graphitization processes of pitch have been investigated. The properties and structure of pitch, its fractions, and the resultant cokes (produced at 1OOOYZ) and graphitization products (obtained at 2000" and 3000°C) were characterized by means of proximate and ultimate analyses, 'H-NMR and IR spectroscopy, optical microscopic, and X-ray diffraction analyses. The results indicate that the oil fraction produces a coke with the highest graphitizability, but the coke yield is rather low. In contrast, the preasphaltene fraction gives a coke with the highest aromaticity but the lowest graphitizability, because the size of the polycondensed aromatic compounds in this fraction is too huge to allow good mesophase deveiopment.
