✦ Synopsis

vi texture, mineralogy and petrography, compositional variability and glacio-tectonic deformation.

The second part deals with pedological aspects of tills, a topic of obvious importance to the farming and forest economy of Canada. Mainly regionally based, emphasis is placed on till mineralogy.

The long history of utilising till in the search for minerals is dealt with in the third part. Two papers deal with the general principles of till prospecting, erratic-train dispersal and ore-body source estimation, and two others provide regional case-studies.

The final part is concerned with the geo-technic aspects of till and its use as an engineering material. A number of interesting case studies on ground-water movement, compaction and geotechnical behaviour, indicate the desirability of civil engineers having available to them the best possible geological information in order to avoid excessive earth-moving costs, or worse, site failure of till.

Overall, the volume offers much concisely summarised and well referenced information for both the research geologist and the practising engineer. It well demonstrates that the day of the traditional Pleistocene geologist, armed only with pick and acid bottle, is all but over. In his place is coming a team, including a drilling crew, mineralogist, geophysicist, geochemist, pedologist and engineering geologist.
