✦ Synopsis

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of CO on potassium predosed silver surfaces show two bands at 757 and 1216 cm-' in addition to the usual CO stretching vibration at P 2 130 cm-'. The frequencies of both of these bands are sensitive to isotope exchange of both carbon and oxygen. These high1 anharmonic vibrations are most easily assignable to the K-O-C bend and O-C stretch of an O-bonded 1 : 1 complex between potassium and CO, although other structures cannot be ruled out. Results with Na and Cs in place of potassium show similar behaviour.

Results of low energy electron diffraction and work function studies of alkalimetal adsorption on metal surfaces are presented. The adsorption of Na on W( 112) surfaces resulted in the formation of one-dimensionally periodic arrays which underwent a continuous compression with increasing Na coverage
