The process of driving out of sulfuric acid from a carbon by heating in vacuum was tracked by ESR measurements. There is a sudden dramatic increase in width of the ESR line, followed by a somewhat slower decrease; the tip of the peak coinciding with the beginning of the driving-out process (-200Β°C).

The development of fine structure in PAN-based carbon fibres prepared in the temperature range 300Β°C to 1000Β°C will be discussed in terms of X-ray and electron microscope results, including direct lattice resolution. Further evidence on high-modulus carbon fibres treated around 28OO"C, and a three-d
