A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) analysis of the stress situation around a fibre break in a unidirectional carbon fibre-reinforced epoxy composite has been performed. Two cases were considered: (i) good fibre/matrix adhesion and (ii) fibre/ matrix debonding. In the case of good adhesion

โฆ Synopsis
Abstract
Carbon fibre reinforced epoxy composites were fabricated from the matrix resin diglycidyl ether of bisphenolโA and novel tetrafunctional epoxy resins N,N,Nโฒ,Nโฒโtetraglycidylโ2,2โbis[4โ(4โaminophenoxy)phenyl]propane and N,N,NโฒNโฒโtetraglycidylโ1,1 โฒโbis[4โ(4โaminophenoxy)phenyl]cyclohexane using diaminodiphenyl methane as curing agent. Mechanical properties and chemical resistance of the composites were determined. Significant improvements in the mechanical properties were observed by adding epoxy fortifier to the resinโcuring agent mixtures before fabrication of composites.
